A Choice To Lead (A slice of History)

Updated: Jan 8, 2019

On Sunday, 2015 April 12, the Jamaica Association of Administrative Professionals (JAAP) selected the All-Island Administrative Professional and All-Island Boss of the Year at a Brunch held at the Mandeville Hotel, 4 Hotel Street, Mandeville, Manchester.  The Guest Speaker was Reverend Garfield Wilson, Senior Pastor, Lacovia New Testament Church of God, St. Elizabeth.

The Competition is a precursor to Administrative Professionals Week to be celebrated during the period 2015 April 19-25 under the theme, “Administrative Professionals...Empowered to be The One”.  Ten (10) participants from five (5) parishes entered this prestigious event.

The administrative professionals were asked to speak impromptu for three minutes on the topic, ‘The art of effective listening is essential to clear communication and clear communication is necessary for administrative success.  What are your views?”   The bosses also spoke impromptu for five minutes on the topic, “China’s ‘incursion’ in the region and effect on the geopolitics of the region and Latin America is a recent feature in the development of these countries.  The President of the United States of America suggested that this involvement needs to be looked at keenly.  What are your views on his response?”

The Competition was keenly contested with excellent presentations provided by all.  The presentations by the bosses were very substantial and may have been the reason why the judges deliberated for a very long time.   The chief judge was Mrs. Vivien Morris Brown.  She was supported by Ms. Bobsie Levy and Mr. Robert Green.

Following the lengthy deliberation, Ms. Inderia Adjudah, MBA, Administrator at the University of the West Indies (Western Campus) and Mr. Odean White, BSc., (Actuarial), MSc. (Econ.), Risk Manager at National Export-Import Bank of Jamaica emerged winners.

Runner-up All Island Administrative Professional of the Year was Miss Kareen Johnson, a Bachelor’s student at Northern Caribbean University and Secretary to the Regional Director at the Ministry of Labour, St. Ann’s Bay, St. Ann while the Runner-up All Island Boss of the Year was Miss Rhoma Tomlinson, BSc., MA, highly respected educator, journalist and radio broadcaster employed to Northern Caribbean University, Mandeville, Manchester.

The Competition has been in existence since 1976 and was opened to members of JAAP only.  A decision was taken in 2014 to open to participation by all Administrative Professionals in 2014 when the year was observed as the International Year of the Secretary and Administrative Professional, by over 100 Professional bodies worldwide and Jamaica decided to join the observance.   The Competition is now opened to Jamaica’s bosses and administrative professionals island wide.
